The most important in a nutshell

Menopausal symptoms

Definition

The climacteric or menopause is the period of hormonal change at the end of a woman's fertile life. In the midst of menopause is the last menstrual period.

Complaints

The symptoms are also very individual for each woman. The most common are: Cycle irregularities, Dry mucous membranes especially dry vagina, Sleep disturbances, Concentration disturbances, Mood swings, Irritability & depressive mood, Joint complaints, Hot flashes, Hair loss and Palpitations.

Period

The period of menopause is individual and varies greatly. As a rule, the beginning is in the mid-40's. Studies show that 50% of all women have already had their last menstrual period at the age of 52. On average, we can therefore speak of 45 - 55 years as the corridor for menopause. Approximately 1% of women already have their last menstrual period before the age of 40.

Measures

There are various ways to alleviate menopausal symptoms. Although nature has some miracle weapons to offer when it comes to menopause, people often fall back on hormone preparations too quickly. Definition: menopausal symptoms

Your very own hormonal transition

Often, menopause is actually dismissed as a phase of life rather than an illness. Although the phase of the last ovulation is inevitable, it does not make the discomfort of those affected any less burdensome. Since the levels of the sex hormones progesterone and estrogen change significantly, menopause is usually accompanied by sweating or hot flashes. These often spread to the face, neck or upper body and frequently alternate with chills or cold sweats. Many sufferers react particularly strongly to stress, have trouble sleeping and complain of mood swings and irritability.

Facts about menopause

Did you know that...

... the first reports of menopausal symptoms only became known in the 1950s?
... the years of hormonal change in a woman are also called "climacteric"?
... one in 100 women have their last menstrual period prematurely - i.e. already in their mid/late 30s?
... the Chinese woman Tian Huang gave birth to a healthy daughter naturally at the age of 67?

What happens during the climacteric

A healthy young girl has about 1,000,000 eggs from birth. With the first period, however, this number has already halved. After about 30 years of regular menstrual bleeding, the last menstrual bleeding is accompanied by the departure of the last egg. The time of the last menstrual period is calculated backwards and is considered the day from which no more menstrual periods follow for at least 12 months. In addition, the uterus reduces the production of sex hormones. The level of progesterone begins to decrease, and the level of estrogen fluctuates. This triggers hormonal chaos in the body - comparable to puberty.

When does menopause begin and how long does it last?

According to statistics, women in Germany are on average 51 years old at their last menstrual period. However, like the symptoms themselves, this varies greatly from woman to woman. Some women report having their last menstrual period at age 45 or younger, while others still have a regular cycle in their mid-50s. In about 1% of women, the last menstrual period occurs in the mid to late 30s. As for the duration of the period, this is also very individual and varies greatly. In principle, periods of 2-10 years are observed. A general judgment about the duration can therefore hardly be made.

The phases of menopause

The climacteric can be divided into three phases. The time before menopause, the time during menopause and after menopause.

  • Premenopause
In the years before menopause, your hormone levels are already changing. The menstrual cycle becomes more irregular, usually shorter, and the period itself changes. You may already experience some symptoms, such as night sweats or hot flashes. Premenopause refers to the years before menopause begins, when the production of sex hormones slowly declines.

  • Perimenopause
What is meant is the beginning of the transition phase. This phase usually begins in the mid-40s and lasts about 4-10 years. The last menstrual period falls in the middle of perimenopause. It is considered a phase of the female body that is hardly predictable, and its course is as individual as the woman herself. This is mainly due to the daily changing hormone levels of the four sex hormones: estrogen, progesterone, FSH and LH. Hormone tests should not be overrated, especially during this time, as they only capture a brief moment of the hormonal situation.

  • Postmenopause
As soon as menstruation has stopped for at least 12 months, this is called postmenopause. Only now is pregnancy no longer possible. The hormones settle at a permanently low level.
