Definition: Stress

Tension in everyday life

In stress, the body is in a state of alarm triggered by a situation that the person perceives as unmanageable. Triggers are stressors, i.e. stimuli that can trigger stress. A distinction is made between external and internal stressors. External stressors are external, such as stress at work or influential events like arguments with friends. Internal stressors, on the other hand, include negative self-talk or certain personality traits such as perfectionism. The stressors can be both physical (e.g., cold, flickering lights) and psychological (e.g., deadline pressure, excessive demands at school or work).

What happens in the body during stress

In stressful situations, various states are triggered in the body. The body releases the two stress hormones adrenaline and cortisol, which are supposed to prepare the body for a fight-or-flight response. The bronchial tubes dilate and can take in more oxygen, and breathing becomes faster and shallower. In addition, the heart beats faster, whereupon blood pressure rises. The muscles tense up and digestion stops. If one suffers from chronic stress, the body is in this state of excitement for a long period of time and hardly has time to recover.

Stress triggers

Common causes of stress are:

  • Over- or underchallenge at work and at school
  • Disputes or conflicts with family and friends
  • Life events such as a breakup, layoff, or loss of a loved one
  • Deadline pressure
  • No balance between work and private life
  • High demands on oneself
  • Illnesses or physical limitations

Different types of stress

Not all stress is the same! It can be divided into eustress and distress.

Distress is negative stress, which describes a long-term, recurring overload. One feels helpless and overwhelmed and hardly has the possibility to relax. Due to this mental block, dealing with the stressful situation is particularly difficult and is perceived as very stressful.

Eustress on the other hand, refers to positive stress that helps us cope with upcoming tasks. These situations are usually short-term and challenging. As a result, we feel more capable and ready to meet the challenge. Eustress is, for example, the tension before an important competition.
