Thuja: The medicinal plant against skin diseases

Thuja is a medicinal plant that was introduced from North America only about 500 years ago. Today it is much used in gardening and landscaping, because it loves moist soils and is evergreen. In naturopathy, Thuja has a firm place today and is used a lot for skin diseases and to support the immune system. Basically, there are many different species of trees of life. In medicine, however, only the occidental tree of life is used.

What is Thuja?

The tree of life is an evergreen plant from the cypress family. It usually grows up to 20 meters high and has a trunk diameter of up to 1.5 meters. The plant grows extremely slowly with a maximum of 20cm per year and becomes very old. 200 years are not uncommon with this plant. The bark of the tree is orange-brown and has longitudinal cracks. If you look closely at the leaves of the tree, you will notice that they grow scaled and the underside of the branch is mostly yellowish. The cones of the plant are both partly male and female and look a little different. The female specimens are rather light brown and very numerous, while the male cones are more reddish, rare and relatively small.
